In 1979, Johan Dolman established Dolman bv, which was primarily engaged in winning and transporting fill and industry sand. These sand-winning projects in, for example, the IJssel Lake, the Gooi Lake and the Wadden Sea resulted in increasing demand for a company who could separate sludge/contaminated sludge from sand. Dolman bv started to specialize in that area and it has now built up 30 years of experience.

A partnership with Boskalis took shape in the mid-1980s. At the same time, there was a growing awareness that cleaning contaminated sediment and contaminated soil was becoming an environmental necessity. Boskalis and Dolman had, by that time, developed similar views about how to tackle environmental problems associated with civil engineering activities. Dolman had also gained experience with techniques for separating sand and sludge using hydrocyloning. This technology was developed further in partnership with Boskalis. The collaboration became increasingly close over the years and, in 1990, the Boskalis group finally took over Dolman bv (with Boskalis Dolman bv as a result).

Boskalis Dolman bv is now a company with global operations specializing in environmental projects and the processing and handling of mineral wastes.
